My apologies for not posting this last week! In case you were wondering, here's a recap of what we did:
1. Students watched CNN students news episodes and discussed current events
2. We finished reviewing the cultures of South American before European exploration (Maya, Aztec & Inca). We then reviewed the Native American cultures of North America, before European contact. Students were able to understand some of the shared pieces of culture as well as discover what made each region's tribes unique.
3. We then moved through a very quick crash course review of what was happening in Europe leading up to the Age of Exploration- starting with ancient Greece & Rome, moving up through Medieval times and the Crusades, and then the Renaissance and Reformation. It is vital that students understand the main events and people of those times because they directly impact why European explorers (and later colonists) set out for the 'new world.'
4. Briefly started talking about the explorers
Here's the plan for this week:
1. Review of the explorers and their motivations, successes and failures
2. Analysis of Christopher Columbus using primary and secondary sources. Students will then be asked to argue about how successful he really was and what type of person he was.
3. Continue to watch and discuss CNN student news episodes
4. If time, we will start talking about exploration into North America- setting the stage for colonists to arrive
