Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Just wanted to put a quick update here for students in Miss J's class in case they forget their extra credit stuff over the weekend.
With the end of the trimester coming up on December 2, this will be the last opportunity for extra credit... take it or leave it. :)
Students were given a packet, but this can also be done on just notebook paper. They are to complete an oral history project by choosing a family member or community member at least around their parents' age or older to interview. On the notebook page, they need to divide it in half and write their questions for the interview on the left half and on the right half jot down high-lights from the answers to those questions. Then, they need to ask their chosen person to tell a story... it can be inspired by something from the interview questions or totally random, but should be something from that person's life. Students need to record high-lights or quotes from that was well. Then, the third and final piece is the students completing a reflection/response to the interview and what they heard and/or the interview process itself.
We talked about oral history in class and I gave them a crash course in interviewing as well, so this is not out of the blue. Their packet also has a list of questions for them to use if they are struggling to think of things to ask.
I was inspired by the StoryCorps organization for this project: https://storycorps.me/about/the-great-thanksgiving-listen/
Feel free to email me with questions or clarifications!
Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving,
Miss J
