Hello! Just a quick update to share what we're doing today in class for Veterans Day: Students are watching and responding to a series of videos to get them thinking about veterans past and present and sacrifices that have been made, and continue to be made each day.
After that, students are working with former president John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address; this is the iconic speech in which he asks "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
We are using that quote as a jumping off point for students to then think about what they are going to do for their country.... shifting their perspective from expecting things to be given or done for them, and instead looking at what they will give in return. The writing prompt was as follows:
“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”- John F. Kennedy
Our soldiers fight/fought for our country and have sacrificed so much. They have chosen to give back to our country through military service. That’s not the only thing we can do for our country- there are many, many ways to give back. Kennedy speaks about not expecting to be given things, but looking to our own responsibility and what we can do… so…
What are you going to do for your country?
I (Miss J) have been very impressed with the responses I'm reading as I sit here and grade. We have a generation of kids who want to impact the world they live in and create positive change. So cool!
Below you will find some of the videos we are sharing with students today.
